Advancing Accessibility Through Strategy, Systems Change, and Inclusive Design

AccessAdvance provides strategic guidance on embedding accessibility into organisational systems, spaces, policies, services, and learning environments. We support businesses, non-profits, healthcare organisations, and educational institutions from K–12 through postsecondary in understanding how their environments and practices shape experiences for persons with disabilities and identifying practical improvements.

Our approach informs decisions, policies, practices, and design, helping organisations streamline processes, strengthen alignment, and shift culture while keeping the experiences of persons with disabilities at the centre. Designing with accessibility in mind improves environments for everyone and drives innovation well beyond basic compliance.

Services include system-wide reviews, policy and programme evaluations, applied research, training, presentations, and accessibility audits. The goal is to integrate accessibility into everyday operations and long-term strategy, building inclusive, resilient, and trusted organisations.

  • “As of 2023, 27% of Canadians aged 15 and older live with one or more disabilities, representing 8 million people” (Statistics Canada, 2023). Globally, the World Health Organization notes that disability rates are rising, driven by population growth, medical advancements, and an aging society. This growing demographic cannot be overlooked.

Legislation like the Accessible Canada Act and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) exist to ensure businesses, schools, and organizations create accessible spaces and services. However, accessibility is not just about compliance, it is about shaping inclusive and welcoming experiences that foster a true sense of belonging for everyone.

    • Aging Population: With more individuals choosing to "age in place," the demand for accessible living environments continues to rise.

    • Impact on Education: The number of students with disabilities registered through Ontario Offices for Students with Disabilities (OSDs) in colleges and universities “increased by nearly 80% between 2013-14 and 2020-21” (HECQO, 2023), underscoring the necessity of accessible learning and living environments.

    • Workplace Inclusivity: Accessible spaces attract talented workers with disabilities, expanding your potential workforce.

    • Enhanced User Experience: Accessible spaces improve the overall experience for everyone, including clients, employees, and their families.

    • Cost-Effective Solutions: Contrary to common belief, accessibility can be affordable and often enhances aesthetics by fostering innovative design solutions.

    • Proactive Budgeting: Planning for accessibility now can reduce future costs and prevent the need for costly, last-minute accommodations.

    • Compliance and Standards: Regular audits ensure you are compliant with evolving accessibility codes and standards.

    • Reputation and Recognition: A demonstrated commitment to accessibility enhances your reputation as an inclusive and forward-thinking organization.
